What is the advantage of 36v batteries?

36 volts is the technically superior voltage for higher power output products such as Outdoor Power Equipment. This is evident by all the major brands offering 36 volts in their professional OPE tools. 36 volts offers the best combination of electrical pressure (voltage) and high motor torque (amperage) without compromising battery capacity (Watt Hours).

Does using the STIHL AL 500 Quick Charger harm the Battery in the long run?

No, using STIHL AL 500 Quick Charger does not damage the Battery. The Battery and Charger are intelligently connected throughout the charging process. Both components facilitate optimal charging and are monitored by the battery management system. This prevents the cells in the battery from being damaged by excessive charging currents or excessive temperatures.

What is the temperature range that each Battery can be used at?

STIHL Batteries can be used within the following temperature ranges:

  1. AK, AP, AR: ‑10 ° C to +50 ° C
  2. Tools with an integrated battery: 0 ° C to +50 ° C
  3. Battery of the HSA 25: 0 ° C to +40 ° C

What is the expected life of a Battery?

The service life of rechargeable Batteries is influenced by:

  1. Proper use of the Battery
  2. The care and storage of the Battery
  3. The number of charge cycles (one charge cycle corresponds to a full charge from 0% to 100%)
  4. The natural aging of lithium-ion cells over time

As a guide the STIHL Batteries in the PRO battery system can be fully charged approximately 1,200 times.

Why are Battery products so expensive?

STIHL offers a wide range of Cordless products in different price ranges. From the entry level priced STIHL Lithium-ion Battery System for use in small gardens and around the house to the STIHL PRO Battery System for professional use. STIHL Batteries and associated tools are of high quality and designed for optimal performance for the respective application and target group. After the initial purchase, buying any additional battery products within the same Battery System is reduced.

In comparison to petrol, battery tools are cheaper over their lifetime as servicing costs are reduced and there is no need to buy fuel or spark plugs.

What does the 80% and 100% charge times mean?

The specifications 80% and 100% refer to the Battery’s % of charge. The corresponding charge time indicates how many minutes it takes for a flat Battery to reach that state of charge. About one third of the charge time is required for the last 20%. The reason for this is that the Battery cannot be recharged up to 100% at a constant high charging current. The charging current drops continuously towards the end in order to protect the cells and retain their performance over many charge cycles. STIHL Cordless Tools operate at maximum performance even if the Battery is not fully charged.

Can I charge my Battery any time?

Yes, the Battery can be charged at any time regardless of its percentage of charge. Charging the Battery for a short period during a work break is no problem. There is no memory effect, the Battery can be taken out of the charger even before it is fully charged.

Is it normal for the Battery and Charger to get hot during charging?

The temperature of the Battery and Charger increases during the charge process. The temperature is monitored over the entire charge process. If the temperature rises above a certain limit, the charge process is automatically interrupted until the temperature drops to a safe level. This prevents the Battery and Charger overheating. The STIHL AL 300 and AL 500 chargers are equipped with a fan which is switched on and off automatically to actively cool the Charger and Battery during the charge process. The fan runs continuously on first generation Chargers.

Why should the Battery be stored with a charge of between 40% - 60%?

We recommends that Batteries or tools with integrated Batteries be stored with a charge between 40% and 60% (2 green LEDs) when they are not going to be used for a month or more. This avoids any discharge and reduces the natural aging of the lithium-ion cells.

Is salty air bad for Batteries?

Salty air can have detrimental effect on the life of the Battery. The impact can vary depending on the length of usage and the salt content in the air. To counteract corrosion of the electrical contacts, store the Battery in a clean, dry and enclosed location. Store the Battery separately from the tool and harger in non-conductive packaging.
